{"id":1123,"date":"2016-07-28T09:38:00","date_gmt":"2016-07-28T08:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chrischalkart.com\/painting_blog\/?p=1123"},"modified":"2025-09-28T10:28:05","modified_gmt":"2025-09-28T09:28:05","slug":"barn-owl-painting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chrischalkart.com\/painting_blog\/barn-owl-painting\/","title":{"rendered":"Barn Owl Painting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barn owls aren&#8217;t as widespread in the UK as they once were, diminishing suitable hunting habitat&nbsp;as a result of modern intensive farming methods being just one of the reasons. However, if you go to the right place at the right time of day, you have a very good chance of seeing them, and it&#8217;s always a complete thrill when you do. We have Barn Owls here in west Wales,&nbsp;and if you&#8217;re lucky you might see one coursing across a field or hay meadow on a warm summer&#8217;s night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ve painted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chrischalkart.com\/portrait-wildlife\/barn-owl-painting.htm\">Barn Owl paintings<\/a> in the past, but having seem some photographs a good friend took of a Barn Owl recently, I thought it was about time I painted a new one, this time something a little larger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stage 1)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chrischalkart.com\/painting_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/barn-owl-painting-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"708\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chrischalkart.com\/painting_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/barn-owl-painting-1-1024x708.jpg\" alt=\"Barn Owl painting\" class=\"wp-image-1124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chrischalkart.com\/painting_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/barn-owl-painting-1-1024x708.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.chrischalkart.com\/painting_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/barn-owl-painting-1-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chrischalkart.com\/painting_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/barn-owl-painting-1.jpg 845w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can see the Barn Owl photograph I&#8217;m using for reference in this image, it was taken at a birds of prey event by my friend and fellow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.karenmberisford.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">artist Karen Berisford<\/a>, as you can see I completely changed the background to the original one in the photograph. To paint the background I applied quite think paint using a palette knife where I wanted certain colours, then I used a fan-brush to soften and blend any edges, which then gives that fuzzy, slightly out of focus look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stage 2 )<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a colours for this painting, namely:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultramarine blue<br>\nBurnt sienna<br>\nRaw sienna<br>\nAlizarin crimson<br>\nLemon yellow<br>\nTitanium white<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">..there&#8217;s also Cadmium Orange on my palette &nbsp;above you&#8217;ll notice, but I didn&#8217;t use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For thinners, I just used Liquin &#8211; a Winsor &amp; Newton product that also speeds drying time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To clean my brushes I
