About West Wales Artist Chris Chalk

Chris Chalk

I’ve always had a fascination with wildlife, nature and the outdoors. Growing up on a dairy farm in West Wales I spent much of my time roaming the fields and woodlands sketching and painting anything that would stay still long enough to allow me to do so.

My twenties were spent serving in the armed forces, which unfortunately allowed little time for indulging in my passion for art. However after leaving the forces in the late nineties I spent six years living in New Zealand and Australia, where I was once again able to take up the brush.

Now working as a professional artist in the village of Cilgerran on the borders of Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire, that passion burns as brightly as ever. When I’m not working in my studio it’s usually because I’m out with my camera or my paints, somewhere in the local area working on ideas for new paintings.

Buying artwork on the internet can be a daunting experience, but this needn’t be so. If you see a painting in my galleries that you are interested in I will gladly email you a larger JPEG file, and answer any questions you may have about the painting, before you buy. If, on the other hand, you’re interested in commissioning me to paint a specific painting just for you, then I always discuss ideas, look at photographs, talk about sizes e.t.c with my clients before they commit. After all, original oil paintings are not cheap, and I want you to be completely happy before I begin a painting.

You can see from the paintings on this website that I paint a variety of subjects, including portraits and of course the beautiful Welsh landscape. I strive in my paintings to create a unique snap shot of a scene, not one that is photographic and rigid, but one that is painterly, full of marks and brush-strokes that impart a little bit of myself into the painting. I work both on a commission basis and as a freelance artist, by that I mean that I paint the subjects that I choose to paint, but I also accept pet portrait and landscape commissions.
